Can you create instance in informix ?
if answer is Yes ,create multiple instance is the same way that you create a instance
the env. variables before initailize
INFORMIXSERVER
ONCONFIG
must be differ from another instance
and then run onmonitor to set db parameter and initial it
some parameters can't be the same value , onmonitor can tell you at initialize time

What OS are you running informix on ??
There is a certain tool in the WINNT version of informix, that's call Instance Manager. Don't know if Unix-versions have it too.

check the onconfig.std file on $INFORMIXDIR/etc
check the sqlhosts.
add services.
