Is there anybody out there who knows if there is an index to measure the value of a db?

What I mean is: if someone wants to sell a db, I'm sure he can't rely only on hours spent in bulding it. Complexity and number of vb lines written should indicate something... or not.

Someone told me that there are some programs that evalute your work and give an index of complexity. After that it would second step to economically value the db.

Any help?

is my programme more "valuable" if i use 1500 lines of code to do something that you can do with one SQL statement?

A db is a good, and it's price is determined by demand and supply. What would a quite complex db worth to your grand-pa, if you designed it for him to store his underwear locations?!

if you want to be pessimistic, go to the rent a coder site that used to flash up on the top of this forum (don't know if it stopped naturally, or if my anti-ad settings finally worked!). check out what folk expect to get for $100 !!!!!

if you want to be optimistic, look at the pricing of multi-user accounting packages.

My question is reasonable, as long as I have to sell a db... and honestly I don't want to just take as much as I can and run. I just wanted to know if there's a fair price for such a job. Unfortunately I'm not into this business and this is the first time someone ask me to do something like that.

It isn't easy to answare your question.
There are lots of considerations about your problem.

- About prizes of a similar aplications, how much cost those aplications ?
- How do you thing is your aplication?
- Any body can do the same?
- Some people can do the same if those people have a some know how about Access?
- Only experts can do the same as you have done?
- About the people who will buy your sistem, how much it's important to
them?

Try to answare all your questions yourself like a costumer.
If you will buy your sistem, how much you wil wnat to pay?

You wanna estimate a fair price? Count or estimate your hours to be spent, multiply with an employee's rate, and you get your price. If it's to expensive to your customer, it's obviously not valuable to him.

my internet&games machine that i'm typing on now doesn't have access installed. i have been browsing the last couple of weeks for the access add-on to the installed office-XP-standard.

here's what i found:

local discount store - a2k2 Frs 790.00
local discount store - office-XP-pro (includes a2k2) Frs 590.00
www.dell.ch - office-XP-pro (includes a2k2) Frs 825.00
www.dell.ch - office-XP-standard (without a2k2) Frs 685.71

conclusions:
-adding word/excel/powerpoint to access subtracts value
-adding access to word/excel/powerpoint adds value



the only answer to your question is to benchmark yourself against the competition: find everything that is similar to your application, compare feature by feature, and price where you are competitive feature/$
...then the real test: try it with a potential customer.

Thanks to everybody for their efforts. I really appreciate it.

I will probably mix up all the ideas to find out what a fair price will be. I think that the most 'disturbing' element in the calculation is that this db will do exactly what the customer want. Nothing else. And I think that that is the most valuable element: personalization!
