excel carriage return from an html form

I have a web form which creates a tab delimited .xls text file via ASP and VBScript.
anyone know how I can convert the carriage returns in HTML text areas into a new line character inside the Excel cell?
If I leave it the 'return' creates a whole new row in Excel

I have tried this in the ASP page:
Code:
FUNCTION replaceReturn( txtField )
replaceReturn=Replace(txtField, vbCrlf, " & CHAR(10) & ")
END FUNCTION
and it works but Excel just displays the & char(10) &
