Function not returning a value

I have a cell (E2 for example) with 061120 as the value. In another cell, I create the function: =LEFT(E2,2) in order to extract the "06" from the E2 cell but when I click enter, all that it says is =LEFT(E2,2) and no value... Does anyone know why or what I'm doing wrong?

Whatabout forcing calculation if you have "Calculate" in the status bar? Maybe F9.

Or, is the cell formatted as text? Try CTRL-SHIFT_~ to reset format

Thanks! I'm not sure what worked (I did multiple things including F9 and CTRL+SHIFT) so I'm not sure which one did it but it's working now. Thanks again!

Great. (BTW, one I forgot to mention earlier CTRL-ALT-F9 is an undocumented recalc everything key sequence.)
