How to read diff data types from same column

Hi

my excel sheet has a column that has values of text as well as numbers, the isse is that while reading data from that column, driver expects same data type throughout the column. so its throwing exception when it finds diff datatype values. i am using ODBC driver. can any one help me out with this.
