Opening a database of a program

First of all, forgive my ignorance because I've never touched a database before. The only thing I've done is install SQL server on a server I setup and let Blackberry Enterprise server take care of the rest.

I have a program that is only made for Windows but all it is, is a database of information and a viewer. I want to take the database and be able to view it so in all hopes I can figure out where to start on opening the database. My goal is to program a reader for my iPhone but we'll have to see where that goes. How do I figure out what kind of database it is?

When I opened it in excel (which is the reason I posted it here), it knew what it was enough to ask me about which data source I wanted and offered three different options, but no matter what, it was still gibberish when i opened it. It also wanted to open an exe file when it was loading in excel but I don't know if that helps any. I posted a screen shot of it.
