format of columns change

Setup: W2000 & Excel2000

Can anyone explain to me what is happening in the following scenario:

I set the format for several cells to "General" (all in row G). I then input a number in the field. (I don't use number as the format because of the appearance). It seems that when I copy/paste that (and several of the lines around it) down the page the format is changed to a "Time" sometimes. The columns immediately to the left (Row F) contain are formatted for "Time" and are calculating a value based on other rows. After copying I do a clear contents. I can check the format and it will say "General", but then at some point input a value and the format has become Time.

Thanks.

Try PASTE SPECIAL > Values and see if that helps.

The problem is that it usually changes (or I think it changes) after I have been entering data (i.e. some days later).
