Question Split-Mirror Backup and Restore Users

All,

If anyone has implemented a split-mirror backup / restore solution (namely using EMC / TSIM) for SQL Server 2000 could they be so inclined to answer a quick question(s) about SQL Server's behavior during the process...

Namely does the SQL Server have to stop during the split?
If no
Does not stopping or quiescing the SQL database leave the database at risk to be placed in an inconsistent state?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy
