total values in row

Can I have a field in a mysql table that counts the occurances of a character "Y" or "y" in the record (row) and updates itself with each record update?

Well, There is no need to have an automatic update field like this because every coder implements procedures to do this.

Any hints at how I can do it? I want to add a field to the table on this page...http://www.lakeside-graphics.com/beefs/avail3.php, that counts the Y's and y's.
