Problems with starting MySQL server

When I type "mysql" in the command prompt of my SuSE 9.0 Linux, I get the message: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)'".
I have installed MySQL automatically, using SuSE's YaST tool, so I guess it is installed correctly. But why there is no socket file in the directory /var/lib/mysql?
What should I do to get my MySQL server going?
I would appreciate any help.
Regards,
Drasko
