fulltext search on binary fields possible?

is it possible to do a fulltext index on a binary char or varchar? i need to do a case sensitive full text search on a big set of data and fulltext is required to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. i keep getting an error when indexing the binary field....is there a workaround or is something else causing the error? thanks!
