Problem with DATEDIFF function

Hi All,
I am facing a problem with DATEDIFF function, the query is as follows:

SELECT DATEDIFF( '1997-12-31 23:59:59', '1997-12-30' )

I tested this query with 4.0.20 and upper version but all in vain.

Please help me in this regard or suggest me another substitute of this function.
