Lightbulb Working with large databases

i'm working with a database with a large set of records. i want to know the better way to make the quering faster. I thought i would create a multiple tables for example, table_users_a, table_users_b,..., table_users_z, with the beginner character, it isn't problem, but even that, what could i do for fields? if i create all fields in only one table i have a table with 50 fields or more.
