Inserting with deferred index updates

Hello all, I'm trying to find out whether one can turn off MySQL's index recalculation before or during inserts, and then recalculate the indexes in one go afterwards? I know this can be done in other servers (ie Oracle) but haven't been able to find it yet via Google or in the MySQL docs...

I'm working on a script which scans a file tree, doing inserts to fill a table with a row for each file on its first run. On subsequent runs, it has to do selects to find whether it saw the file on the previous run. Now, I've setup indexes on the fields I select on frequently, and it's sped up the searches greatly (19 rows/s to 78). But inserting and updating them on the first run's a lot slower (15 to 9) due to the index recalculation.

Any help appreciated!
