why is mysql4 jdbc connection time a lot more than mysql5

Hi!

I encountered the following interesting thing, when I am connecting to mysql4 with jdbc it takes almost a half a second to connect to a database on the same maschine, while if I am doing it with mysql5 the connection time is only a couple milliseconds...

Anybody has any idea what is the reason fro this?
I am using mysql-connector-java-3.0.15 version.
