Low-level MySQL communication

Does MySQL have a very low level communication protocal that one can use to talk to a MySQL database? For instance, MS SQL Server has TDS and Oracle has OCCI. These are very very low level protocals, but are also incredibly fast (as you are talking to the DB in it's 'native language' so to speak).
