"Error 2013 Lost connection to MySQL server during query" on SSH Tunnel connection

I'm using PuTTY to tunnel to one of my MySQL servers. I can connection locally via the CLI no problem, but using the Admin gui, Query browser or even Toad from my workstation over the tunnel gives me the above errror.

I can connect to other MySQL servers over an SSH tunnel no problem, no idea why this one is different. Anyone got any pointers?
