Index creation very slow.......

Hi,
I have an Innodb table with 14 million rows. I want to create an index on one column. It ran for 20hrs and still no index, I had to kill it 'coz it was taking up too much space.
The innodb_buffer_pool_size is 390MB. Sort_buffer_size is 16 MB.
Can anyone suggest how can I speed up the index creation?
Any help would be appreciated.
