Set up MySQL first or the front end first? is MS Access compatible? -database newbie

I downloaded MySQL 5.0 and am thinking of using MS Access as a front end. I have a few questions in this regard.

1. Is this a sound idea compatibility-wise?
2. Should I get the hang of SQL before I begin making a client for a non-existent server?
3. Should I consider another DB server software aside from MySQL?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

-Coffee
