looking for recommendation on character set

Can anyone give me a suggestion on what character set to use? I'm assuming that ASCII will be the correct decision. I can't imagine using any special characters outside some basic punctuation in one or two VARCHAR fields (periods, commas, and semicolons). Again, thanks for your efforts.
