mysql odbc connection not showing in utf-8

I currently have 5.1 MySQL ODBC connection installed on my pc in order to connect it to Crystal Reports. The data works and everything seemed ok at first until closer inspection there are characters that are appearing that are wierd and out of place. Someone told me that this is because the Unicode UTF-8 isn't what is being used by Crystal Reports. Is there a way to fix this? any help would be greatly appreciated.
