Recommended starting point?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and new to databases. I work for a very small company and have been assigned the task of learning all about databases. Can anyone suggest some good textbooks for me to pick up to learn the basics?

Have you already decided on learning/using MySQL? Databases is a big topic. If you really want to understand the basics rather than just find some cookbook-style answers then I would avoid product-specific books at first.

The following is one very good place to start. It's used as a textbook on some college courses:
