Access Database from behind Firewall

I have a dedicated managed server with 1and1. The MySQL databases are firewalled so that they can't be accessed from outside of the server. I also have a shared server with them but it has size limitations on the database size. Is there any way that I can get around the firewall so that I can access a database setup on the dedicated server? I was thinking that a PHP script should be able to act as an intermediate and pass on requests somehow?
