Need help choosing a database!

Hi,

I'm currently working on a project that requires the use of a database to accept incoming signals from UbiSense tag (a Radio Frequency technology). Each sensor in a tag will telemeter 40 signals per second. And there are about 25 or more of them moving around, so the total number of data signals that the database must be able to receive and process in one second is about 1000. (The database might be displaying those information over the Internet, but this is not a real time task and only respond upon user requests)

What I need is a database that is capable of handling 1000 data signals in 1 second. I don't know which database will work best for that specific task. I was thinking of MySQL, but I'm not sure. And also, what resources are needed for that purpose?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Any pointers to any resources are also very helpful.
Thanks in advance
