MySQL and Advanced Java Access

I have used MySQL and JAVA before in the normal manner. I wish to now know whether I would be able to query the structure of a database using JAVA connectivity, and if not, what would be my best bet? I would like to be able to see tables such as in 'describe tablea' but with relations as well (assuming InnoDB)
