Retreive Realtime data from mySQL with Javascript

Does anyone know of any scripts, methods, etc which will allow me to run a Javascript script and have it check for new data in a mySQL database (ie realtime), and then output it to a PHP page without having to do any META refreshes or Header() functions?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thx
