How would you connect clients to a server, if there's no connection?

Yes, if you do both (client & server) from same system.

Yes you could create a Oracle server and a client based environment within your LAN environment. Or perhaps for a practice session you could install VMware and install the Database server in a Unix platform in your VMware and connect to the Database server from your host as client.

Regards
Ashique
