I've had pretty good experiences with Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, Korth, and Sudarshan. The 6th edition is most current.

I'm taking a database class at university and am using that as the textbook. I had no knowledge of databases whatsoever when I started using it, and like it so far. Pretty much all my current understanding of databases came from that book. As far as I've gathered, that book is considered something of a mainstay in database education.
