end of comm msg connecting to 92db from a v71 sqlplus

Hi,

i have to as a interim measure connect an v71 db application
to the latest v902(iAS) infrastructure.

I tested first using a v817 sqlplus to the v902 db successfully, then
the tnsnames.ora entry was replicated to the v71 net/admin area.

The v71 sqlplus failed however with a end-of-comm error. It took a
while to fail and i have seen name resolution errors - i am sure it went
pass the name resolution this time. can you offer any insight ?
