Query-Builder or Query-By-Example alternative

Hi guys,

I am new in this forum and at first I would like to introduce myself a little bit. I am a 23 years old IT-student from Germany. At the moment I am writing my Bachelorthesis. The thesis basically is about making databases accessable for user without sql-knowledge. They should just be able to select data from the database. Update, insert and delete data is not important for my thesis.

As far as I know up to know: there are a lot of query-builder tools out there and unfortunatly every single product is nearly the same. They all use a kind of Query-By-Example-syntax, so they all are pretty similar to Microsoft Access.

Does anybody of you know something which seems to be easier than SQL but is not like Query-By-Example? Any tools, query-languages or buzzwords are welcome for further investigations.

Thanks in advance,
fish

Thanks for your suggestion. I may write something about artificial intelligence and understanding natural language.

Anybody else with suggestions for my topic?
