Small scale DB

Hi all,
I want to do some evaluations by changing some modules of a DBMS and implementing my custom code in those modules. To do this evaluation, I am looking for a small scale DBMS whose code is modularised, so that I can plug-in my code easily. Which, from your experience, do you think is the right DBMS for this purpose (which would allow me to plug-in the code easily without requiring me to understand the whole system etc.).
