question about database preformance

hello,
iv'e just finished a course in the university...read a nice book called "fundamentals of database systems"
i wanted to know...
1. what r the different ways to improve prefomance and decreasing the memeory usage...(data structures, search algorithms, etc)
although preformance is more important..i know of indexes.
but is there something better?
2. what is the most commen raid level used today i nthe computer indutry?
