newbie question: how do i log in to my PostgreSQL db server?

ok,
i am a total newbie at PostgreSQL so bear with me please. My sysadmin guy just gave me the log in info for my PostgreSQL database but i have no idea how to log in to it. The only thing he gave me is the location of the db server, something like "dummydatabase.location.blah.edu" and the name of my database, i.e. something like "databasename". So what do i do now? How do i log in to that server. In Oracle you have the Oracle Client software you use for this kind of stuff, but not here. anybody help.

thanks.
