I have a dedicated server plan with the following details:

Intel Celeron 2.2 GHz, 400 MHz FSB
512 MB ECC RAM
80 GB hard drive
1000 GB Monthly Transfer included (Non-Cogent)

Now, I have a couple of BUSY phpBBs there using like 20 mySQL databases.

Recently I started gettin' error:

Too many connections: unable to connect to mySQL database (database name).

I posted in a couple of news groups and and was advised to increase the max_connection = 300 in my.cnf.

I did it using Shell Access through Vi editor.

Now I am not gettin' that error again, this time the problem is It's takes life to load pages. The server response is too slow.

Wondering if it has to do something with my recent changes?

Also if anyone can help me with further optimzation of my.cnf as per my server details above for a better performance?

I am posting my current /etc/my.cnf file here:

---------------------------
[mysqld]
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
set-variable = max_connections=300 (Recently Added)

[mysql.server]
user=mysql
basedir=/var/lib

[safe_mysqld]
err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

--------------------------------

Thanks in advance.

Deiley.
