Unanswered: sql server timestamp data type

Can anyone give me a brief summary of this datatype? Anything that I would need to know to use this in tables that are populated via an asp web service.

True TIMESTAMP columns are basically just a slightly mangled counter of the number of data modification (INSERT/DELETE/UPDATE) operations in a database. They are automagically updated whenever a row changes, so you can't explicitly set them, it only makes sense to read them. Their primary use is for optimistic concurrency.
