Unanswered: Restore DB2 database to Another Server

    Hi All,

I am new to DB2. Background is oracle.
I need to restore a DB2 database to another server.
The backup was taken on v7.1 on Windows NT
I Need to restore to a Windows 2000 machine with v7.2
What are the steps i need to do.
I have already installed db2 software on this new server.
I see in the control centre that i can create a database from backup.
Is this the way to go???
Or is there anything else i'm missing.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Should be no problem. However, in DB2 for Windows, I believe that you need to copy the entire backup directory structure over to the new machine, and not just the backup file.

The database needs to be formatted from the 7.1 format into the revised 7.2 format, but I believe that DB2 does it automatically upon restore. At least I know that DB2 automatically converts DB2 version 7 to version 8 upon restore. I would make sure you have the latest 7.2 fixpak installed on the new machine.

You may have to bind the package list db2cli.lst and db2ubind.lst to the new database

db2 bind @db2cli.lst blocking all grant public

    Thanks
I was just copying the backup file and not the whole directory structure
Will give it a go and see what happens

You must have directory structure. You can manualy create directories and then in the last dir copy the backup file.

    Hi All,

    Still Having Problems.
When i try to create database from backup i get the error message

the database alias parameter "" is not valid or specified

The Backup is from another server.
I have named the alias the same as the database name but to no affect.

I have no problems creating a database from backup with backups taken from the same server

    Any one have any ideas.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Question

I have restored backup image(DB2 V8.1) in the same OS (Windows 2000). Not sure if you can backup in NT and restore in 2000. I have read somewhere that DB2 does not allow you to do so. Can anyone clarify this.

    Thanks.

You can restore between any version of the operating systems below, within each of these categories:

    1. Windows to Windows.
    2. Linux to Linux.
    3. UNIX to UNIX (AIX, HP/UX, or Solaris)

So a backup from version 7 of DB2 on NT can be restored on a DB2 version 8 running on Windows 2000.
