Unanswered: Connecting to a VPN for MySQL access

My client has a computer housing a database inside their local Virtual Private Network, and they want a perl web-script I'm developing to access it remotely. Connecting to databases within a network is easy, since I only need the computer name, but I don't know how to get to inside the VPN with perl, and I can't find any resources that describe how to do this.

It looks to me like I have to gain access to the VPN, and then talk to the database. So how do I get to the VPN? Do I have to reconnect for each page of my web app, or can I get the connection to persist?

    Nowhere Near You
The last time I did something like that (to Oracle), a VPN client was all that was required.
