Unanswered: Oracle 9iAS infrastructure installation problem

    Hi all,
Please help! I have installed oracle 9i rel 9.2.0.1.0 for windows on my server. I have been asked to install oracle 9iAS portal on this very machine due to lack of resources. Upon trying to install Oracle 9iAS infrastructure 9.0.2.0.0, the installation goes smoothly till some configuration tools are run and they fail.

    1. Oracle database configuration assistant fails with the error: Database domian name shouyld begin with alphabetical character. I got around this by launching the assisant manually and creating the database.

    2. Infrastructure configuration assistant fails: i get this in the log
    Configuration failed for IAS
    IAS Instance creation failed
    Configuration failed for JAZN
JAZN configuration failed: unable to establish a directory context.
    Configuration succeeded for IASProperty
    Configuration failed for IAS
    Configuration failed for JAZN

3.the other tools that fail are:
    9iAS Randomize password
    Single sign-on config assistant
    infrastraucture mos_osso configuration assistant
    OPMN config assistant-start DAS instance.

I am installing on a clean Windows 2000 machine. Please help

Is a very, very buggy collection of s/w.
IIRC, you want to start with V9.0.2.1.0 & then patch up to V9.0.2.3.+
ALWAYS take the OUI defaults & the chances for success are improved.
Reformat the disk & start over again, again.

I did take all the defaults. Anymore info other than plain "reformat"?

Yes, reformat & install 9iAS R2 Infrastructure FIRST.
This will install its own DB to be used by OID.
If you want, need or desire a 2nd DB on this box
wait until after the mid-tier installs & works.

Oh ok....lemme try that. A question, I thought the infrastructure database was only to be used by the apps server for its own datafiles, can we use that database for other data as well? This might sound like a dumb question, but I have been thrown into this apps server project without any prior experience. Thanks for all the help.

    Can you? YES!
    Should you? NO!
So was I thrown onto the sharp stick which is 9iAS R2.
FWIW, while I have only limited exposure to 10g AS,
it is considered FAR MORE stable (less buggy) than 9iAS R2.
If you can, you should not bother with 9iAS R2 & only deal with 10g AS.

Ok I finally got it to work. Apparently the problem was in the fact that I neede to assign my machine to a fully qualified domain and then set the ball rolling. I took your advice and deinstalld oracle 9i db and installed just the infrastructure and then on top of that the portal. So far so goo. Thanks for the help, I'll keep posting about further glitcches.
