    Unanswered: Linking from 8i to 9i

    I am trying to link from a 8.1.7.4 instance to a 9.2.0.4 instance. The link is created successfully but when I try to use SQLPLUS to get data from the 9.2.0.4 instance I get the following message.

    ORA-06401 invalid driver designator

    The articles I've read all deal with linking the same versions of Oracle. Is it possible to do this type of a link?

    TIA.

    06401, 00000, "NETCMN: invalid driver designator"
    // *Cause: The login (connect) string contains an invalid driver designator.
    // *Action: Correct the string and re-submit.

    post the dblink definition and the select query. Antecedent's crytal ball won't be albe to see that information.

    This is the create statement:

    create public database link TRNG_CONNECT connect to SSO_USER
    identified by xx using 'T:zz.adminx.wfu.edu:1522:TESTX';

    I've also created it with

    create public database link TRNG_CONNECT connect to SSO_USER
    identified by xx using 'T:zz.adminix.wfu.edu:TESTX';

    Both successfully created the link

    select spriden_id from spriden@TRNG_CONNECT;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-06410: NETCMN: invalid driver designator

    CREATE DATABASE LINK NEW_LINK CONNECT TO LINK_USER IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD USING 'TNS_ALIAS';
    is how I've always created a DB_LINK; where the string between the single quote marks is the alias name (leftmost string before the 1st equal sign) in the tnsnames.ora file.

    Definitly follow anacedent's advice... The string you are passing is OLD OLD Oracle sqlnet ... That might have worked with Version 7 ... Just use the alias found in the tnsnames ...
