    Unanswered: Searching records?

I want to create a stored procedure which takes a project name and returns any project with a name similar or = to the input parameter. This is so the user can search for a project although the spelling may be incorrect or whatever.....

Any hints on how to start this? It seems that I could use SOUNDEX or DIFFERENCE, but I don't know where to start.

    Any hints?

I tried to create a full text catelog but I keep getting the error :

Execution of the full text operation failed. The directory name is invalid.

I have check to make sure the file path was correct and it is.

    Any thoughts?

How do you make Full-Text search match similar sounding search words?

I have no idea. I am just trying to figure something out so that if the user cannot remember the name of a project, he can type something and hope the project is hit.

I cannot create catalogs for the full text search anyway because of the error message posted previously. Any suggestions on how to accomplish what I want to do?

How do you make Full-Text search match similar sounding search words?
    From BOL

    Examples
    A. Use FREETEXT to search for words containing specified character values
This example searches for all product categories containing the words related to bread, candy, dry, and meat in the product description, such as breads, candies, dried, and meats.

    USE Northwind
    GO
    SELECT CategoryName
    FROM Categories
WHERE FREETEXT (Description, 'sweetest candy bread and dry meat' )
    GO
Certainly not a perfect solution but it might help. I've not had much experience with it.

    Free-Text

Yes this will search for contained words but nothing I have seen suggests full text will search for similar sounding words.

True. Soundex might work but its far from perfect too. blindman posted this a while ago. Maybe it will help.

I tried it out and was impressed at just how well it worked compared to Soundex.
