Unhappy Unanswered: dblink through application hangs

We are still using oracle 10.7 applications on 7.3.4 database. This database was using oracle gateway 4 to access a SQLServer 6.5 database. We have to upgrade our SQLServer 6.5 to 2000. This will force us into not being able to use the current gateway.
I created an interim database on 8.1.7, and created views to the SQLServer 2000 database using heterogeneous services. Then created a link from 7.3.4 to 8.1.7 to access the views.
This works when I use SQLPlus, but when accessed from the application, it hangs.
I've searched metalink extensivley for a couple of days, looking for information on why this would hang. Metalink says it's not a supported combination, but just because it's not supported doesn't mean it can't be done.
Has anybody gotten this to work through Oracle Apps 10.7 on 7.3.4 to SQLServer 2000?

What does a SQL_TRACE of the session which "hangs" show?

Somewhat by definition SQL code can't "hang".
However on some occasions will take eternity to execute
or wait patiently for some event to occur.
    So which is it?
Is the process doing a billion way cartesian product?
On which event is the process waiting?

I haven't yet traced the sqlnet, that's my next isolation step. The sql is basic -
    SELECT MQR_VERS_NBR,
    STOP_PRINT_FLAG
    FROM MQR@TG4PSQL
    WHERE MQR_NBR = 16822
AND MQR_STATUS_CODE = 'A'; -- which translates to a view on sqlserver of one table, so no nasty cartesian, least not on this one.
I traced the gateway, and it is definately getting to the SQLServer.

    Thanks for the reply.

I live on a hill side about 1 mile from the beach; caddy-corner from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club & Racetrack. Horse race season started 21 July until 8 Sept.
I can watch the races from the living room & west patio.
I can see the tote board with my 1 meter telescope.
I can see the surf break on the beach.
I'm off to see this evening's matches at the Acura (tennis) Classic at La Costa.

    HAND!

Cool Have to upgrade to 8.1.7.4 - patch fixed the problem! Imagine that...

DOG! OK, I am jealous! I only get to lounge in my pool and watch the Thunderheads form over the Superstition Mountains, while the fighter jets practice takeoffs and landings at Williams Gateway airport. (Did I mention sweating my nugs off? Hey, beats the heck outa my Big Blue days in Poughkeepsie NY. )
