    Question Unanswered: High Water Mark

    Hi - AIX 5.2 DB2 8.1.5

    Does anyone know how i can get
    the database to lower the high
    water mark - in order to remove
    one of the tablespace containers?

    I think I've asked before, but I didn't
    get a working reply. Clearly I should be
    able to remove a disk (look below).

    Tablespace ID = 10
    Name = S_LBR
    Type = Database managed space
    Contents = Any data
    State = 0x0000
    Detailed explanation:
    Normal
    Total pages = 10240000
    Useable pages = 10239936
    Used pages = 2528
    Free pages = 10237408
    High water mark (pages) = 7936000
    Page size (bytes) = 4096
    Extent size (pages) = 32
    Prefetch size (pages) = 32
    Number of containers = 2

    SMS purge and shrink databases

    Sathyaram,

    The link you provided goes into strategies for DMS tablespaces.
    I intent to purge data from my datamarts that have SMS tablespaces. Would there be a way to win back space after purging data in an easy way. Or do I need to drop a tablespace and restore a backup to a new tablespace?

    I am running very low in diskspace on my tiny datawarehouse server and creating offline backups is becoming a problem too...

    There is no concept of HWM in SMS ...

    The only way to get rid of unused pages is REORG ...

    BTW, if you are using IMPORT ... REPLACE for 'purging' the data, there will not be any unused pages left after the command , ie, all space will be released

    HTH
