    Unanswered: Alter Table DB2 v7

    Can someone explain to me why an alter table statement to add a column to a table requires an exclusive lock on the whole database?

    generaly X lock on table , if not tablespace , but not DB , .


    because , your altering table , that will X lock on table.

    You will also encounter some locking on the system catalog tables in addtion to the table being altered.
