The actual flavor of the OS matters!
But you neglected to share that KEY information with us.
    You're On Your Own (YOYO)!
    P.S.
Talk to your local System Administrator.
You can lead some folks to knowledge, but you can not make them think.
The average person thinks he's above average!
For most folks, they don't know, what they don't know.

Backup and Recovery manual is a good place to start ... It goes thru different senarios depending on your business requirements ... Also, you
need to know what OS you are running ...

.... Are you in ARCHIVELOG mode ??? if so, are you looking at ONLINE backups ...

sql> alter tablespace tablespacename begin backup; --- sets tablespace to backup mode

sql> host copy d:\oradata\filename..... e:\oracle_backup\..... -- use host command to run os command to copy the file from location a to location b

sql> alter tablespace tablespacename end backup; -- takes tablespace out of backup mode

    OFFLINE backups ...
Shutdown the database (I use shutdown immediate, startup, shutdown)
I shutdown twice with the last one being a shutdown normal...

(in windows environment, stop the OracleService)

Copy the datafiles from location a to location b...
