Unanswered: Connecting to Server manager (svrmgrl)

    Hi

I have installed Oracle software on Windows machine and I am trying to create database manually. I have created a new oracle SID, started the oracle service and created the password file using the following commands :
%ORA_DIR%\bin\oradim.exe -new -sid MADDB -startmode m
%ORA_DIR%\bin\oradim.exe -edit -sid MADDB -startmode a
    %ORA_DIR%\bin\orapwd.exe file=%ORA_DIR%\database\PWDMADDB.ora password=change_on_install

After i execute the first command commands, a oradim file is created in
%ORACLE_HOME%/ora81/database folder having the content "Message 51 not found; product=RDBMS; facility=ORADIM".

Now when i try to connect to Server Manager (svrmgrl) to create database, i am getting the following error message as "12154: TNS:could not resolve service name.". I dont understand why TNS name it is lokking for. Can anybody suggest me where i went wrong or do i need to install oracle software again.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mahesh

    wrong syntax

oradim -new -sid sidname -startmode auto
    or
oradim -new -sid sidname -startmode manual

    a/m will not create it.

also after creation see that it is started in control panel/services

    then
create password file and better give a different password but not c..l
    then
    set oracle_sid=sidname
    svrmgrl
    connect internal/password

    then rest of the steps

Ensure that MADDB is in your listener.ora ... You may have to stop/start
    the listener ...

Go under Confiruation and Migration Tools, then Net Manager
and configure the listener ... Ensure that MADDB is a in the listener

You should then be able to drop to the command prompt and check to see
if you can start the listener (LSNRCTL)

    c:\> LSNRCTL
    LSNCRTL> STATUS or START

    Arrow listener is not required.

I this when connect to svrmgrl the listener is not required,
it is required mostly when @/host string is given.

when creating with oradim the sidname you should have given MADDB.
the password file should have been pwdMADDB.ORA

it will be ora-12560 TNSrotocol adapter error
if the oracle_sid is not matching with the Service started.

svrmgrl doesnot look for tnsnames or listener to start and only look for service & oracle_sid environment variable.

there is a installation problem in the machine.( please write the platform
    you are using, win/unix/linux)

My operating system is Win 2K Server.
Even i thought the same, i should get "ora-12560 TNSrotocol adapter error" not "12154: TNS:could not resolve service name." error.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Mahesh

A couple things I would check:

From your command prompt do a 'net start' ... do you see your OracleServiceSIDNAME in the list?

If you are using 8.1.7, have you tried using sqlplus instead on svrmgrl? From your command prompt you could try sqlplus /nolog .... connect sys/yourpassword as sysdba

Also in your oradim command, you could add the -intpwd switch and specify your internal password there, instead of running the orapwd utility after the fact.

Also, I do believe that if you are connecting to your W2K server via terminal services, you can have issues with the environment variables set. If you are directly on the server, you won't have these issues.
