can you do a clean shutdown?

I think this happened due to a shutdown abort sequence.

    it doesn't work.
After restarting the server, when you take any of the oracle applications it is showing "oracle initialization or shutdown in progress".

If you attempt to startup the database manually (svrmgr30 or svrmgrl)
what happens ?? Does Oracle give you a better error message ???

error 472 is that the Process Monitor terminated with some error ...
You may need media recovery on one of the files ... There may be another
trace / log file somewhere that may be helpful in determining what the
problem is ... Check UDUMP and BDUMP directories for other files from
the same time period (roughly) ...

Once you attempt to startup the database from server manager, post the
message that Oracle returns you ...
