Want to show us the SELECT statement.....

    But I guess something like:

    Code:
    USE Northwind
    GO

    DECLARE @OrderId int

    SELECT @OrderId = MAX(OrderId)
      FROM Orders

    SELECT @OrderId
    Will do....

The physical order of data in a database has no meaning.

What language are you writing this in? VB, C#, T-SQL?

    In T-SQL, you can do:

    Code:
    USE Northwind

    DECLARE @test INT
SELECT @test = COUNT(*) FROM Customers
