Unanswered: Removing an Oracle DB Instance

I am running Oracle 8.1.6 EE on Windows 2K (SP4).

When I start Oracle Database configuration assistant and try to remove a database instance, I get the message "connecting to database" and then the process hangs. It remains on that screen for more than 40 minutes with no other activity.

I have executed this process several times before with no issues (except when I forget the INTERNAL password).

    Any ideas?

    Regards,

Forgive my ignorance; these are the steps as I think they should be done. Could you correct any of them that are wrong/out of order?

    0. Backup DB
    1. Shutdown DB
    2. Remove database files
    3. Edit registry to remove OracleService[SID] entry

    Anything else?

    Thanks,

well, this is assuming that you care about the backup at this point.

that looks like the correct steps.
