    Unanswered: Oracle error message

    Hi All,

I am trying to create a table as select * from table1. One of the column in my table1 is datatype long and when I try to run my select statement I am getting the following error message:

    ORA-00997:illegal use of LONG datatype

Please tell me how to avoid this. Thanks.

You cannot create table as select * from table where there is a long column
involved ... you have to create the table, then run pl/sql proc loading variables ....

The select is part of an insert statement and the error is
thrown because you cannot use longs or long raws in an insert..select
statement. This is true in all versions. However an error is not thrown at compile time until 9i. In 8i it only fails at runtime.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.
