You should just get out and mingle....say hi to people...find out what interests you have in common...

The problem here lies in the disgusted looks you get when you tell people your interests ....

    I'm horrible at small talk

I have always been horrible at small talk also. Say hi, that's easy. How are you, again..easy. Now what? After that, if I don't have an actual purpose (that doesn't feel too akward), i'm lost for words.
